We often distinguish between history and story, forgetting that history has always been brought to life by creative artists, whether in the form of carved and painted images, through oral storytelling traditions, or the written word.

Playwright and theatre director Patricia Cumper, novelist Umi Sinha and Ingrid Persaud, winner of the 2020 Costa First Novel Award, will discuss how fiction sits side-by-side with history writing. WritersMosaic’s director, Colin Grant, chairs this essential and timely conversation.

Our panel will explore the literary voices shedding new light on histories we thought we understood; writers who use fiction to excavate that which has been left out of history. Such writing doesn’t blur the lines between fact and fiction, but rather illuminates untold truths, and unearths pasts that have been neglected or purposefully forgotten, and, in so doing, challenges the myths of foundation stories.

This event is brought to you by the online platform,WritersMosaic, an initiative of the Royal Literary Fund for new writing from a mosaic of literary voices and cultures across the UK, in partnership with Home. Produced by Fane.
