Dearest friends, loved ones, idols —
I’m not getting married, any time soon at least. And so, I have written a book about that decision: First Comes Love. About weddings, marriage, doubt, normality. In planning this wedding (book) I plundered the depths of class, taste, alternative romantic set ups, divorce and audiences. I thought about queer marriage and straight marriage; the legal and the (il)logical; the tradition and the resistance; marriage’s history and its present.
Please join me for this virtual event as I ask: what is the allure of an institution that is grounded in patriarchy and in elitism, and that invalidated all but one kind of love till quite recently? Why do so many of us fight against these social ills while also posting pictures of proposals on Instagram? Is it possible to be married while subverting the institution by doing it one's own way, or is marriage having the last laugh after all?
