In conversation for this exclusive event, the Secret Barrister and Harriet will share their experiences of working in the law and discuss the failures of the criminal justice system.

Harriet is a barrister specialising in human rights and criminal law, and a fierce advocate of women’s rights. In this event, she will lay bare the appalling status quo of abuse against women in our society, offering an irrefutable case for why change is needed in policing and justice. Most vitally, she will also give insight into her manifesto for how to get there. She’ll expose the ways the criminal justice system lets women down – from officers failing to properly investigate to a lack of consequences when police behaviour is unacceptable, to backlogged courts and the realities of convincing a jury.

Junior barrister specialising in criminal law and Sunday Times bestselling author, the Secret Barrister returns to Fane Online to ask why a practising barrister might come to feel the need to reveal the lies, secrets, failures and crises at the heart of this world of wigs and gowns. They’ll chart their winding career path towards practising at the bar, taking in absurd traditions and sharing some shocking stories from their working life.

Together, they will consider what we understand by justice, the darker sides of working in criminal law, and how the things our justice system gets wrong are not the things most people expect. This promises to be a vital and enlightening event – a call to arms that we must all get behind.
