Set in a dystopian future and based on Margaret’s 1985 novel of the same name, The Handmaid's Tale is now an Emmy, Golden Globe and Peabody award-winning Hulu series. Since its first airing in 2017, it has become a cultural phenomenon, with handmaids acting as a global symbol of resistance against the disempowerment of women.

For this exclusive event, Margaret and Bruce will shed light on the process behind bringing the novel to the small screen, from adapting the book in the writers’ room through to production and casting. They’ll touch on extending the story across multiple seasons and the influence of contemporary politics and changing gender norms, as well as the impact of COVID-19 on the fourth season’s schedule.

Bruce has loved the novel since college, and credits it with helping him to develop his own voice as a writer. Talking with Margaret, he’ll explore his efforts to keep the series entertaining in a heavy political climate, and how he runs a show so intimately interested in the experience and pain of being a woman.

Fascinating and entertaining in equal measure, this is a must-see event for any fan of The Handmaid’s Tale.
